Nurse, 30, charged with eight baby murders at neonatal unit appears in court

A nurse has appeared in court charged with the murder of eight babies following an investigation into infant deaths at a Cheshire hospital.

Lucy Letby, who is also charged with 10 counts of attempted murder of babies aged under one between June 2015 and June 2016, was remanded in custody after appearing by video link at Warrington Magistrates’ Court.

It follows an investigation into the Countess of Chester Hospital, Chester, which began in 2017.

Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Elsie McNall, Barney Gee, Daisy Parkin, Maddie Freed, Joseph Gelder and Eli Gelder were named in court as the eight alleged victims. They died between June 2015 and June 2016.

In a ten-minute hearing, Letby, of Hereford, spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

The alleged victims’ families also watched from elsewhere via video link.

Letby was initially arrested in July 2018 as part of a major police inquiry into the deaths of 17 babies at the hospital. She was quizzed on suspicion of murdering eight babies and attempting to kill a further six. She was subsequently bailed pending further inquiries. But was re-arrested in 2019 after being suspected of trying to murder another three infants. Cheshire Police confirmed today that she was being held over the deaths of the eight tots as well as the attempted murder of three more babies – bringing the total to nine.
